About

This site was created to give Star Wars RPG players an ever-expanding resource of randomly-generated names. As a GM and player of many years, I know it can be difficult to come up with names on the fly. There are a lot of "random name" sites out there to provide help, but I've found that many of them have either a small amount of frequently-recurring names, or just jumble letters together to make names like "Mxlpluy Fganlgeno."

Neither of these have proven very useful to me, so I decided to create a database that other SWRPG players could add to, thus making for an ever-expanding database of character names. My hope is that the database will continue to expand, thus providing a consistently fresh and non-predictable resource of random names for those GMs and players who have a hard time getting inspired.

FAQ

Since this project is so new, there aren't really any FAQs yet. So, this is really not so much a "Frequently Asked Questions" as "Questions I Anticipate to be Asked." If you have a question to be added to the FAQ, please feel free to email me.

  • Names I contributed never show up in the random generator!

Thanks to the actions of some buffoons (I suspect they're grade-schoolers), all contributed names now enter a submission queue and must be approved by the webmaster (that's me) before they are entered into the database. Therefore, it may be hours, days, or longer before your name shows up in the database -- if at all. As a rule of thumb, however, only inappropriate or obscene names are eighty-sixed, so if your contribution isn't one of those, you can rest assured it will probably show up eventually.

  • Can I get SWRNG in a downloadable format?

Sadly, I wouldn't even know where to begin a project like this. I simply don't have the kind of programming skills necessary. If anyone does, however, and is interested in helping out, please let me know.

  • I came here to GET random names, not make them up! That's my whole problem! What gives?

My intent is to make this a give-and-take process. If everyone who visits adds a few names of their own, the database will get that much larger, and you help out the next guy. The more names in the database, the more useful this whole project becomes. So, by adding a few names of your own, in a roundabout sort of way, you're helping yourself out.

  • Can just anyone add to the names database?

Yes, anyone can! In fact, please do so. I plan to keep it freely open to everyone for as long as people remain civil and the database doesn't become clogged with useless or "funny" names. If that ever happens, I will just lock it down, put user registration and passwords in place, and playtime will be over.

  • Hey, did you know that Site X already does this?

    Good for them!

  • The randomizer gives out ridiculous results like "Han Skywalker" and crap like that.

The larger the database gets, the less frequent those sort of combinations will be. This is a still a random process, though, so they won't all be perfect.

  • I made a mistake when entering a name into the database, can I remove it?

Not currently. Eventually, I plan to put a user system in place that will allow people to track how many "donations" they've made to the site, and so forth. But that's in the future. For now, just email me and I'll fix it.

  • Somebody put an obscene / inappropriate name in the database.

There should be a "report" link next to every generated name. Just click the link and the name will be put up for consideration, to be deleted or left alone by yours truly. Thanks for helping to keep the database free of dust and grit.

  • Why can't you categorize by species?

If this turns out to be useful to people, organizing names by various Star Wars species is a feature I plan to add. However, it's a lot of work and really not worth it until there are many more names in the database. Right now there are so few names that to put them into categories would only be a hindrance to getting lots of results.

  • What about Droid names, Jedi names, etc?

See the above question. Droids and Jedi will be getting their own subsections soon, when I have the time and if this turns out to be useful to people. :)

  • Your site's ugly.

Making it pretty is on the "todo" list. Right now, I'm just worried about it making it functional. But it is fast!

  • Got a question for the FAQ? Bug report? Complaint? Suggestion? Email me.
