Coppolla Gets Booed

IMDB reports that Sofia Coppola, the director of Lost in Translation (a movie that, as far as I can tell, you are required to either adore or despise), got jeered at Cannes for her new film, Marie Antoinette.
Movie-maker Sofia Coppola has defended her new period drama Marie-Antoinette after it was booed during a press screening at the Cannes Film Festival Tuesday night. Despite admitting the response was “disappointing,” Coppola insisted the Kirsten Dunst-starring movie was always going to provoke heated debate. She said, “It’s better to get a reaction, it’s better than a mediocre response. Hopefully some people will enjoy it. I think it’s not for everybody.”
Star Kirsten Dunst defended Coppola by saying: “People who like Sofia Coppola will love this film. People who don’t won’t but then they’re not really under her radar anyway.” Hearing this, I can’t help but be reminded of Penny Arcade’s Twisp and Catsby routine.
Don’t get me wrong, this is a bit disappointing to hear. I’m in the camp of people who really enjoyed Lost in Translation. The trailer for Marie Antoinette, however, looks hopelessly twee, like something Cameron Crowe might dream about after finishing off a hash pipe and half a pepperoni pizza while Cutting Crew plays on the stereo. Then again, I do tend to favor the historical epics that feature killing a lot of people with trebuchets, so perhaps I’m not really under Sofia Coppola’s radar.

Twisp and Catsby are brilliant.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Kirsten Dunst isn’t all that great of an actress.

With some regret, I have also come to that conclusion.
