Godzilla Project: Acknowledgements and Bibliography
Reverend Matt
What you are about to see is almost identical to an earlier post entitled “Godzilla Month: Acknowledgements and Bibliography.” This is, of course, because I am using many of the same resources for subsequent episodes of the Godzilla Project. So what I’m going to do is re-post it here, with updated information, and then go back and edit/update it at the end of every reviewed film, and link back to here from there. Get it? Well, it’s not incredibly important. But credit where it’s due!
First off, I would, of course, like to thank everyone who read and everyone who commented. Your support makes it all worthwhile; I already know all this stuff, after all. Particularly supportive were Elizabeth Conway, Michael Callies, and Craig Duncan; much of this would have been literally impossible without them. And thanks once again to Dan Swensen, for letting me clutter up his website with this nonsense.
My primary source for much of the information in these pieces is the films themselves, and whatever commentaries, featurettes, and pamphlets their DVDs may come with. The very best of these DVDs are certainly the Classic Media releases, whose special features are put together by Ed Godziszewski and Steve Ryfle. (See individual films reviews for which ones are done up Classic Media style.) I also did some readin’; here, then, is the bibliography:
Cerasini, Marc / Lees, J. D. The Official Godzilla Compendium. Random House, Inc., New York, 1998. Indispensable to a project like this one, and highly recommended.
Kalat, David. A Critical History and Filmography of Toho’s Godzilla Series. McFarland & Company, Inc., 1997. Not quite as phenomenal as Ryfle’s book, below, but an extremely important work nevertheless.
Ryfle, Steve. Japan’s Favorite Mon-Star: The Unauthorized Biography of “The Big G.” ECW Press, 1998. Really the definitive text; the Godzilla Project itself is but a frail shadow of what Mr. Ryfle has accomplished.
G-FAN magazine, published by Daikaiju Enterprises, Ltd., is an invaluable resource. Edited and published by J. D. Lees – one of the authors of The Official Godzilla Compendium - it comes out every few months. The following articles, in particular, were very useful for the Godzilla Project:
- “Godzilla Abroad,” by multiple contributors, G-FAN #22
- “Godzilla Speaks! A Conversation with Haruo Nakajima,” by Michiko Imamura, Ed Godziszewski, and Kumi Takikawa, G-FAN #22
- ”Hidden Meanings: Did Godzilla Ever Really Symbolize America?” by Richard Pusateri, G-FAN #41
- “A Kaiju by Any Other Name,” by Jolyon Yates, G-FAN #45
- “The Kongs of Tsuburaya: Obie and Smoke,” by Peter H. Brothers, G-FAN #48
- “Without Raymond Burr: Godzilla at the Egyptian,” by Peter H. Brothers, G-FAN #50
- “Which Came First, the Monster or the Bomb?” by Rick Hansen, G-FAN #57
- “Kaiju Metamorphosis: Anguirus,” by Mike Russo, G-FAN #57
- “The Mystery of the Mangy Kong,” by Michael Bogue, G-FAN #57
- “Godzilla vs. the Bomb,” by Bill Bussone, G-FAN #63
- “King Kong vs. Godzilla: Camp or Cool?” by Michael Bogue, G-FAN #64
- “It’s a Beautiful ‘Thing,’” by Peter H. Brothers, G-FAN #64
- “Ghidrah Memories: The Most Monsterrific Birthday Gift Ever,” by Michael Bogue, G-FAN #65
- “The Terror of Harry Saperstein,” by J. D. Lees, G-FAN #68
- “Weird Godzilla Stills,” by multiple contributors, G-FAN #68
- “Godzilla’s Serious Side,” by J. D. Lees, G-FAN #68
- “A Monster For All Seasons,” by David Annandale, G-FAN #69
- “’The Truth is the Truth’: a 50th Anniversary Analysis of Godzilla,” by Peter H. Brothers, G-FAN #70
- “’Emergency! Emergency! Godzilla is Approaching!’ A Fortieth Anniversary Reminiscence of Godzilla vs. the Thing,” by Michael Bogue, G-FAN #70
- “Monster Talk: The Best, or Just a Bust?” by Michael Bogue, G-FAN #71
- “The First American Godzilla: an Appreciation,” by Richard Pusateri, G-FAN #75
- “Akiko Wakabayashi: An Exclusive G-FAN Interview,” by Armand Vaquer, Brett Homenick, and Makato Wakamatsu, G-FAN #76
- “Larry Robinson: Jack of All Acting Trades,” by Brett Homenick, G-FAN #77
- “Paulette Rubinstein: From Godzilla to Bergman,” by Brett Homenick, G-FAN #77
Finally, I do but little Internet-based research. I’m oddly primitive that way. But here are some sites that have come in handy:
The Internet Movie Database is startlingly untrustworthy, but I’ve used a bit of it nevertheless. Here are their pages for the movies we’ve looked at so far:
Gojira: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0047034/
Godzilla, King of the Monsters: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0197521/
Gojira no Gyakushu: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0048127/
King Kong vs. Godzilla: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0056142/
Mothra vs. Godzilla: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0058379/
Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster: http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0058544/
The Classic Media releases, and a wealth of information about them, may be found here: http://www.godzillaondvd.com/
I’ve recently started culling images from the definitive Godzilla news site, Monster Zero, found here: http://www.monsterzero.us/
Thank you again!

You have now officially surpassed MST3K as my primary source for Godzilla-related research. The one common thread on Dimfuture.net that I really enjoy is the obvious passion that all of you show for your subject matter.

For a minute I thought it said “Acknowledgements and Blashpemy.”
I guess I should write a No One Reads Friday for today or something.
