Line Between Ironic Humor and Fact Finally Collapses: Midway’s Joust Adaptation Official

Daniel Swensen

From Dark Horizons:

Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters’ CP Prods. have optioned Midway Games 1982 arcade game “Joust” reports Variety.

Though “Joust” has had several sequels, the original game, in which one or two players control a knight on a flying ostrich who combats flying buzzards, is best known.

The company is also developing Midway Games 2005 release “Area 51″ as a feature film.

I would love to wax sarcastic about this, but I simply don’t have the words.

Didn’t they already make this? I think it was called A Knights Tale. It had one of those gay cowboys in it. Not the one with the hot sister, the other one. And it had that guy from the Illusionist too. Not Edward Norton, not Paul Giamatti, the bad actor with the bug eyes. Rufus Sewer or something. And Wash, it had Wash in it too.

I actually didn’t mind Knight’s Tale. Not a great movie, but an entertaining one. It had the temerity to do away with the traditional orchestral score (which is just as anachronistic as the classic rock they did put in) and they make some pretty up-level jokes that would be easy to miss if you didn’t study English literature. They even make a Simon the Summoner joke.

I’m going to go out on a limb and predict Joust will be devoid of such humor.

  3. Pete Says:

That may contend with Wing Commander and the entire Resident Evil series for worst video-game adaptation.

  4. Daniel Swensen Says:

I keep mercifully forgetting about Wing Commander. Damn you Dr. Pete.

  5. Sean Says:

I remain optimistic that this will blow my socks off… oh who am I kidding.

  6. Tyrell Says:

Optimistic until the cast Shia Labeouf as the knight and J. Lo as the ostrich.

    Okay, I’ll stop now.

  7. carpboy Says:

Now that Transformers has come and gone while I spent most of the production cycle basically closing my eyes with my hands over my ears singing LA LA LA LA LA, I guess I need something new to do that for.

  8. Pete Says:

I’m sorry, but even a day later, I’m still a bit bewildered. Who wakes up one morning and thinks: “You know what would make a cool movie? Joust.” Probably the same person who came up with the Q-Bert cartoon. “Hey, you know that game where you jump around on cubes? That would be an awesome show!”

Someday, we’ll come to our senses and grind up network and studio executives for meat.

  9. drmagoo Says:

Hey, I used to watch Q-Bert.

The only way this movie will be passably good will be if it’s actually just video of the game.

Still waiting for ‘Elite’ the movie
