Ah, November. The month when thousands of aspiring authors, amateur and deeply amateur alike, elect to punish themselves with the frantic output of National Novel Writing Month. The goal: to churn out fifty thousand words in a month, roughly approximating the completed first draft of a novella. Yes, let’s go ahead and do the joke: National Fifty Thousand Words In A Month Roughly Approximating the Completed First Draft of a Novella didn’t make good ad copy. And the domain name had already been taken by Taiwanese porn spammers. Such is life.

Anyway, desperate to fill out the sorely lacking “Writing” section of the blog (and to provide fresh bloggy content to all six-odd of you) while going on to “win” Nanowrimo for the third year in a row, I hit upon an idea. An idea so simple and brilliant you get one once in a lifetime. An idea so balls-out crazy it just might work. All right, so it’s a web comic. And the people at Nanowrimo thought of it first, but I didn’t know that at the time. So shut up.

Throughout National Novel Writing Month, I will be providing updates and musings on the process (”blogging the novel,” as I’ve seen it put, although the phrase, like most phrases involving “blogging,” makes me feel vaguely self-conscious and perhaps a bit gassy). I’ll generally be posting whenever the mood strikes me, or whenever I’m procrastinating on my fledgling novella… so the month of November will either echo with stony silence, or hit an all-time high of useless, frantic posts. And, at least once weekly, we’ll be featuring a Nanowrimo comic — written by me! And illustrated by the illustrious Reverend Matthew Kessen! Yeah, that’s right — who’s laughing now?

So please enjoy the first installment, fittingly entitled Act One: Hubris. There’s more like it to come! Actually, the Reverend and I had a conference, and we both decided that there should probably be funnier to come, so it won’t be exactly like this. And it might not be as wildly, unbelievably, testicle-slappingly hysterical as Nanowrimo’s own daily comic, but I can pretty much guarantee that ours will have way more profanity. Hey, look, it’s funnier than The Lockhorns, anyway, right? Huh? Yeah? Okay, that does it, get off my porch.

In the meantime, The Reverend Kessen will be keeping Dimfuture running with his excellent and insightful Godzilla Project. Among other things. Big, important things. Or so he tells me. I didn’t get this far by asking a lot of questions.

It’s gonna be an unusual month here on Dimfuture.

First of all, I hereby declare it Godzilla Month ‘round here. To state it directly, I have some things to say on the topic of the original Godzilla, and a few related topics, and say them I shall! Look for daily updates, then, for the next four weeks. We’ll take breaks from the Godzilla on Wednesdays, to rest and relax and look at Vincent Macropod cartoons. Like this one!

Secondly, our man Swensen is going to be up in his eyes in National Novel Writing Month. Does this mean he’ll be around less? Err, maybe. It would seem so, but then, there’s nothing more satisfying when working on a creative project than working on some other creative project. And he has also promised to share with us his musings on the novel-writing process. And some of these will take the form of a new, November-only cartoon series, written by Dan and drawn by me! W00t!

My apologies for my recent absence, and the ensuing lack of news updates. As previously noted, I was kidnapped by ninjas. That’ll happen. My sincere thanks to Reverend Matt for taking up the slack while I was gone, and you can now look forward to plenty of blogging goodness from both of us.

Incidentally, I feel I should mention two things. First of all, Reverend Matt came on board without much fanfare, or even a bona fide announcement, and I feel I should rectify that situation now. I am absolutely overjoyed to have him on board, and to have his fine work gracing dimfuture.net. As a longtime fan of Vincent Macropod, I regularly find myself squealing with glee at being able to host it here, available to all. The Reverend is an embarrassment of riches to this site, and I would cringe and scrape before him like a lowly serf if he didn’t live thousands of miles away…

(OK, Matt, was that five bucks’ worth? I certainly hope so.)

Secondly, I beg your indulgence while we work out a few technical kinks in implementing Vincent Macropod and other various new features to the site. I was just getting into the rhythm of mindlessly parroting Sci-Fi Wire every other day, and then the Reverend comes along with all this content and I’m as bewildered and confused as Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer. But we’ll get it all hammered out, don’t worry.

dimfuture.net is moving to new hosting, so the site will be offline for awhile. I don’t know how long just yet — but, a while. Hopefully a very short one. Look for new blog content when we triumphantly return!
